“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

The icing on the cake means to take something good you already have and make it even better. This alludes to making a good cake even better when it’s topped with yummy icing.
Most little girls dream of getting married and some start thinking about how they want this big day to play out before they’re even engaged. Our youngest daughter just got engaged and from now until the day she says “I do”, she will be consumed with swirling images of what she wants this wedding to look like. There are so many questions which have to be answered when planning a wedding it’s easy to become overwhelmed and miss the joy of the preparation.
In John 2:1-11, Jesus and his disciples were invited to a wedding and in the first century these were huge celebrations which lasted for days. The host family was responsible for providing food and drink for this big social event, and it would have been embarrassing to have run out of wine. Jesus’s mother approached him about the situation and he seemed annoyed when he said to her in 2:4, “Dear woman, why do you involve me?” It wasn’t his intention to reveal himself at this moment but he showed compassion when he acted.
Jesus had never performed a miracle before but Mary must have known what he was capable of and he alone could save the festivities. Jesus supplied the party with wine but not just ordinary wine. Usually the best wine was served first and then as the guests drank too much the cheaper wine was brought out but in this case the choice wine was served last.
As wedding plans get underway in our house I’m sure there will be missteps but through it all the day will be perfect regardless of what blunders occur. The focus needs to be on the union of two people who are willing to profess their love in front of God, friends, and family and stand on that oath forever. The icing on the cake is their love for each other shows and they both love the Lord with all their hearts.
