I could eat a horse

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
Matthew 5:6

I could eat a horse is a silly way to say you’re so hungry you could eat anything, even something as unappetizing as a horse. Some speculate this comes from desperate situations where people were forced to eat a horse to survive.
Our body comprises of eleven distinct systems which are intricately entwined with one another to sustain us. We’re born with an insatiable appetite for both knowledge and sustenance and we even get signals when we need to eat to keep our organs functioning properly.
We all get hungry, but Jesus talks about a different kind of hunger in Matthew 5:6 saying, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” This is spiritual hunger which also must be fed. As infants, our first food is milk but as we grow, we graduate on to solid foods. The same concept is true in our spiritual life. We start with the basic truth when we first become Christians but as we progress in our spiritual life, so does our godly wisdom and discernment.
Paul uses the analogy between milk and meat to describe the spiritual growth of the believer. He says in Hebrews 5:13-14, “Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” So, when we continually fill up on the Word of God, we will be satisfied.
