Easy as pie

“ ‘For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’ ” Matthew 11:30

Easy as pie means something is not complicated to do at all. This is an old simile comparing one thing to another. It is a lot easier to eat pie than making pie.
We just went camping with some friends and I thought it would be a great idea to make a blueberry pie since my girlfriend gave me all these blueberries. I followed the recipe to a T except I added all the berries I had rather than using the specified quantity. I even went the extra mile and put this lattice top on it to impress my friends.
After dinner I proudly displayed my work of art and when we cut into it, it was like blueberry soup. Because I added all the extra berries, I should have also added extra flour so the pie would form, I messed up the consistency.
I think we are a lot like that pie sometimes. We may look all put together on the outside but unless we have the Lord in our hearts, we will fall apart when we are tested under pressure and lose our composure. The Holy Spirit dwelling in us is the component that keeps us together. When we are living a life representing Christ, we have self-control and peace regardless of the circumstances we find ourselves in.
You can learn a lot about the character of someone when they are parking a camper, especially when something goes wrong while setting up. Staying composed is a lot easier said than done but Jesus has called us to be the light in this dark world. He tells us in Matthew 5:14-16, spiritual purity is reflected when we are illuminated by the Holy Spirit.
It’s such a comfort to know God gives us grace and patience even when things are supposed to be as easy as pie and something goes awry. He gives us guidance and clarity when we pray and we really do make the world a little brighter when we are reflecting Him.
