Slept like a baby

“when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” Proverbs 3:24

The idiom “slept like a baby” means to have had a good night's sleep and feel rested in the morning. This is a comparison to how sound a baby sleeps when they are content.

Our middle daughter just had a baby girl and she is perfect in every way. As I am cradling this tiny human in my arms I am overwhelmed at the miracle I’m holding. I know the struggle my daughter had to carry this little girl to term so I appreciate how healthy she is even more. I see God’s grace.

Because the baby came about two weeks early she really is a sound sleeper. My grandma would say, “She’s not done yet.” but I tend to think she’s just a great baby. My daughter has purchased props and is now on a mission to take newborn pictures. I go over and I’m amazed at how she’s able to manipulate this baby into these poses and change her outfit without her waking up. This child doesn’t have a care in the world.

Isn’t it a shame we all can’t sleep that sound? My husband sure can because as soon as his head hits the pillow…he’s out. I’m one of those strange birds who only needs about 5 hours of sleep and sometimes I struggle to get that. I have a hard time shutting off my brain when I wake during the night so I usually just get up and start writing.

We allow the worries of the world to disrupt our rest because we don’t let go of our burdens. In Matthew 11:28 Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” He alone can restore peace to our souls when we are in turmoil or distress. I know it’s easier said than done, especially if we are a “fixer” but our God is bigger than any of the issues laying on our hearts, we just have to give them to Him. Notice the verse says “come to me”. In order for us to go to someone we have to turn in their direction and move forward, that’s what Jesus is asking. He wants us to turn to Him and ask for His help.

Regardless of what keeps you up at night, our God is able to give us rest so we can sleep like a baby. All we have to do is seek His face and cast our cares to Him.

Hi, my name is Kim Johnson.  I am a Wife, Mom, Sister, Friend, and Grandmother.  I have lived in Virginia for the past 25 years but my roots are from North Carolina where I grew up hearing idioms.  My children said I should write these things down so I took it to a deeper level and connected them to scripture to show how God has continually revealed himself in my life.

You may be wondering where "Blooming With Jesus"  came from. My inspiration came from my grandma who loved me unconditionally and spoke these idioms to me throughout my life. Through these I have been able to blossom in my faith and grow closer to God each day. My hope is as you read these you too will be able to grow in your faith.
